Coalition Awards State Funding to Members
February 6, 2020
ROCKFORD – The Illinois YouthBuild Coalition, Inc. (IYC), a statewide nonprofit organization representing 16
programs statewide serving opportunity youth, announced today that it has awarded grants to 12 of its
member programs to support program operations. Beginning with the enactment of the Illinois YouthBuild Act in 1997, a small number of Illinois programs were funded on a discretionary basis by the Secretary of Human Services until this funding was cut completely in 2009. In 2019, the General Assembly approved a grant of $2.5 Million to IYC to support new, existing and restarting programs around the state. Funds are administered through the Illinois State Board of Education.
Grants are being awarded to:
Planning Grant
Pedro Albizo Campos High School - $100,000
Restarting Programs
YouthBuild Quad Cities in Rock Island, IL - $100,000
Quad County Urban League in Aurora, IL - $99,963
Operating Grants
City Incite in Chicago, IL - $193,875
Community Youth Development Institute in Chicago, IL - $220,000
YouthBuild Lake County in North Chicago, IL - $242,976
Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL - $244,504
YouthBuild McLean County in Normal, IL - $213,125
Youth Conservation Corps in Waukegan, IL - $241,661
Metropolitan Family Services in Chicago, IL - $250,000
Comprehensive Community Solutions in Rockford, IL - $115,094
The Coalition, in keeping with its mission, advocates for resources and recognizes that a wise investment of state dollars (coupled with local and federally leveraged dollars) will bring real returns to the taxpayers of Illinois through decreased social costs and reinvestment in declining cities and neighborhoods.
Kerry Knodle, President of the Illinois YouthBuild Coalition said, “YouthBuild has always had strong support from the General Assembly and state agencies and has produced tangible results in our communities. We are excited about the opportunities these grants provide for the young people most in need in our state and communities”.
About YouthBuild
Illinois YouthBuild programs provide a range of services for out-of-school, unemployed and at-promise (opportunity) youth aged 16-24. In full-time year-long programs, young people spend half their time completing their high school education and the other half learning job skills through building or renovating affordable housing for homeless and low-income families and/or other in-demand occupations (manufacturing, IT, health care, etc.). They participate in personal and group counseling, receive mentoring from caring adult staff, earn an optional AmeriCorps education award for post-secondary education, and go on to college or jobs averaging $11/hour.
